I’m Nick Armitage, aka DJ Nickname… I am a London based DJ and collector of Funk, Soul & Hip Hop records.
I started DJing in 2004 when I moved to London. My debut in the city was at Shoreditch’s infamous Pool bar (RIP) where I could be found rocking a monthly party that played host to some of London’s best break dancers, poppers & lockers as well as the East London party massive.
Since then, I have become 55DSL‘s official UK DJ, playing parties, in-stores and events in conjunction with Grazia magazine. In addition, I have been consistently playing at clubs, bars and parties across London Town.
In Summer 2010 I started 2 exciting new projects with Chris Read (Music of Substance/1Xtra); one, a club night called So Much Soul, where we showcase the very best in modern funk and soul music once a month at The Social in London’s West End. The other is Rap Music Fan Club a platform from which we will be launching a number of projects over the next few years. The first project, launching in October 2010 is called Classic Material which will incorporate music, art, design and photography in celebration of over 30 years of recorded Rap music. Classic Material is calling on the skill and support from the likes of DJ Format, DJ Vadim, DJ Food, Andy Smith (Portishead) and many, many more and will run for just over a year at the Contemporary Art and Music Center in East London.
In 2009 I started Droppin’ Science with DJs Matman and Daredevil. Droppin’ Science quickly became one of East London’s most popular Hip Hop parties, welcoming guest DJs such as Kidkanevil (First Word Records), DJ IQ (Professor Green), Mr Thing (Extended Players), Harry Love (Dizzee Rascal/Clipse), Chris Read (1Xtra/Music of Substance) and DJ Nonames (Foreign Beggars) to name just a few! Whilst the parties continue on the 1st Saturday of every month at Vibe Bar, Brick Lane, Droppin’ Science has now grown to include an established blog and a popular monthly radio show on SenseiFM which you can subscribe to via iTunes here.
Other highlights over the past few years include LIVE PA shows with modern Funk sensation Randa Khamis (Freestyle Records) comprising of a fantastic aftershow party for Corrina Greyson, guest mixes on Skanks Radio (for Nu Skool Breaks), a guest mix on Diesel:U:Music Radio and SenseiFM as well as playing at London Fashion Week parties, DJing in the Nike ID store in Nike Town, repping 55DSL at private Notting Hill Carnival parties alongside ‘It’s Bigger Than’ and ‘YoYo’ DJ’s, playing in-store at the Fenchurch flagship store, supporting The Nextmen at their quarterly parties at The Westbury, playing with DJ Vadim, warming up for 3x World Champ DJ Tigerstyle for King Underground, Jazzy Jeff, The Cuban Brothers and many more.
